The Stoney Trail bridge over the Bow River. Douglas Fir trees grow on the river bank, one of the few places they are found east of the Great Divide.

From this vantage point you overlook the Bow Valley upriver to the mountains. The town of Cochrane, once a ranching community, is now more famous as the home to McKay's Ice Cream store.

Highway 1A is a remnant of the old Trans Canada Highway. Here there is a reservoir formed behind the Ghost Dam at the confluence of the Bow and Ghost rivers.

There is a spring on the north side of the road where you can stop and replenish your water supplies. The road begins to get twisty here as the road comes close to the river.

This is where you would turn onto Hwy 40 if you were going to visit beautiful Kananaskis Country. It is the site of another hydro-electric power project and dam.

A big cement plant is located here. A local mountain is mined for limestone and the resulting cement is shipped to China to supply their building boom.

A former mining town, Canmore is now a thriving tourist community and home to skiers and mountain bike enthusiasts. It is the gateway to the Rockies.

This famous mountain community is known for its spectacular scenery and the Banff Springs Hotel built by the CPR to attract visitors to the area in the 1880s.

The Bow Valley Parkway is an interesting alternative to the main highway with comfortable lodging places and access to hiking trails.

The entrance to the Icefields Parkway. This road takes you into high mountain country, through snow-capped mountain ranges and glacier fed streams.

Columbia Icefields. The road passes by the nose of the Athabaska Glacier, the source of the North Saskatchewan River.
