Ashland is a nice town to stay in. Restaurants all along a creek. we stay there every trip down.

Decent size town to stay in with nice motels/hotels for good prices

Could go thru Monteray and take the sea but I figure you want to make some time

Beautiful town. a bit priceier. May not be bad in winter. I would go for dinner on the little downtown main street
