Eastern half if dirt/washboard/shallow sand. Western half is paved. Good road for dual sport/adventure tour bikes. Much of the road is narrow, and there are some cliff-side roads. There will be touristy traffic. -

I have ridden the Western half with my Goldwing and loved it. One of my favorites. Turned around when it turned to dirt. This is an excellent, close to town route that is popular for bikers (and tourist). It leaves the city feel behind in a hurry if you don't have much time to ride. Great views of the lake and turn offs for picnic-ing.
